What is TaxCalc?
TaxCalc is UK tax software used by accounting practices as well as individuals. TaxCalc Individual is the version for filing your own Self Assessment return. It’s officially recognised by HMRC and includes all the supplementary pages, including non-resident pages, so it handles returns that HMRC’s free service can’t.
Is TaxCalc free?
No, but there’s a 14-day free trial. After that, TaxCalc Individual costs £42 for the tax year and covers up to six SA100 returns.

Is TaxCalc MTD compatible?
Not TaxCalc Individual, which is for the annual Self Assessment return. For Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, TaxCalc sells a separate product, MTD Quarterly Filer for Business, which sends quarterly updates to HMRC from your spreadsheet records. TaxCalc is HMRC-recognised for MTD for Income Tax software, but it doesn’t publish a price for the Quarterly Filer - you have to ask for a quote.
Pros and cons
Pros:
Six returns for £42 - good value for a household
Covers every supplementary page, including non-resident pages
Officially recognised by HMRC
Checks your return before you file
Runs on Windows, Mac and Linux
UK-based phone support
Cons:
Desktop software you have to install - no mobile app
More detailed than a simple return needs
No free filing once the 14-day trial ends
MTD quarterly updates need a separate product, priced on request
Trust returns and planning tools cost extra
Who is TaxCalc best for?
TaxCalc suits sole traders with more involved returns - several income sources, capital gains or non-resident pages - and households filing more than one return, since one £42 licence covers six. It’s also a good fit if you prefer software installed on your own computer. If your return is simple, GoSimpleTax or HMRC’s free service will feel lighter. If you’re due to join MTD for Income Tax, ask TaxCalc for its Quarterly Filer price before you commit.
