What is GoSimpleTax?

GoSimpleTax is UK software for doing your own Self Assessment tax return without an accountant. You enter your income and expenses, it calculates your tax in real time, flags allowances and reliefs you might have missed, and files the return directly with HMRC. It’s fully HMRC-recognised and covers the pages most sole traders need, including self-employment, employment, property, partnership, foreign income and capital gains.

Is GoSimpleTax free?

Partly. You can create an account, enter your figures and see your estimated tax bill for free, with no card needed. You pay when you’re ready to submit the return to HMRC. The Individual plan costs £69.99 per tax year on a subscription, or £113.99 as a one-off without one.

Is GoSimpleTax MTD compatible?

Yes, through a partner app. GoSimpleTax’s own software is for the annual Self Assessment return. For Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, it offers an MTD plan through Coconut, an HMRC-recognised app that handles digital records, quarterly updates and the final declaration. The MTD plan is listed at £12.99 a month and you sign up through Coconut. If your qualifying income is under the MTD threshold, you can carry on filing a normal Self Assessment return with GoSimpleTax.

Pros and cons

  • Plain-English questions and a real-time tax calculation

  • Tax-saving prompts built in

  • Covers most return types, including property, foreign income and capital gains

  • UK-based support team, including people with HMRC experience

Cons:

  • No free filing - you have to pay to submit

  • The one-off price (£113.99) is much higher than the subscription price

  • MTD for Income Tax is handled through a separate app, Coconut, at £12.99 a month

  • Support on the standard plans is by email

  • You do the return yourself - there’s no accountant checking it

Who is GoSimpleTax best for?

GoSimpleTax suits a sole trader who is comfortable doing their own return but wants more help than HMRC’s free service gives: plain-English questions, a live tax calculation and prompts for reliefs you might miss. Trying it costs nothing, so you can enter your figures and see your bill before deciding. If your income is over the MTD threshold, you’ll need its Coconut-based MTD plan or another MTD tool. If you’d rather hand the whole thing to an accountant, look at Taxfix instead.
