Time Tracking

Track your billable hours across clients and projects.

If you bill clients by the hour or want to understand where your working time actually goes, time tracking software is a straightforward way to get that visibility. Good time tracking tells you what you’ve worked on, for how long, and how much of your time is billable. For freelancers who invoice by the hour, it also makes it much easier to issue accurate invoices and to demonstrate the value you’ve delivered. The tools in this category range from completely free to mid-range paid, and several integrate with invoicing software to close the loop between tracking time and getting paid.

What to look for

Billable vs non-billable - look for the ability to mark time as billable or non-billable and to assign it to specific clients or projects. Clockify, Toggl Track and Harvest all handle this well.

Invoicing integration - Harvest is designed around the track-then-invoice workflow and lets you convert tracked time directly into an invoice. If that’s your process, it’s a significant time-saver. FreshBooks does the same.

Free tiers - Clockify is genuinely free with unlimited users, projects and clients. Toggl Track is free for up to five users. Both are capable enough for most sole traders.

Reporting - if you want to understand where your time goes across clients, projects and types of work, reporting quality matters. Clockify and Toggl Track both have detailed reporting on their free tiers.

Browser and mobile - check that the tool has a good mobile app if you work on the go, and a browser extension for desktop tracking. Most do, but it’s worth verifying.
