What is Dext?

Dext, previously called Receipt Bank, is bookkeeping automation software used by small businesses and accountants. Its core job is capture: it reads receipts and invoices, extracts the details and sends them to your accounting software. Dext says it reads documents with over 99% accuracy and connects to more than 36 accounting platforms, including Xero, QuickBooks and Sage.

Is Dext free?

No, but there’s a 14-day free trial with no card details needed and no contract.

Key features

  • Capture by mobile app, email, desktop upload or WhatsApp

  • Over 99% accuracy claimed on supplier, date, tax and total

  • Documents stored in Dext Vault for 7 to 10 years

  • Connects to more than 36 accounting platforms

  • Mileage tracking by GPS or map, included with every subscription

  • Five users included

  • 250 documents a month

  • ISO/IEC 27001 certified and GDPR compliant

Does Dext track mileage?

Yes. Mileage tracking is included with every Dext subscription at no extra cost. You can record a trip as you drive using GPS in the mobile app, or add it afterwards by dropping the start and end points on a map. Dext works out the claim using HMRC’s approved mileage rates, and once a claim is approved it goes to your accounting software.

It makes sense if you already want Dext for your receipts. If mileage is all you need, a dedicated app like Tripcatcher or MileIQ costs far less.

Who is Dext best for?

Dext is the most capable capture tool here, and priced like it. It suits a busy sole trader or small team with a lot of paperwork, especially one whose accountant already uses Dext. For a handful of receipts a month it’s hard to justify £290 a year when Hubdoc comes free with Xero and AutoEntry starts at £15.45 a month. Take the 14-day trial before committing to the annual plan.
