What is MileIQ?

MileIQ is a mileage tracking app for iPhone and Android, owned by Bending Spoons. It detects when you’re driving and logs the trip without you doing anything. Afterwards you swipe right for business or left for personal, and MileIQ builds a mileage report you can use for your tax return. It says it has more than a million active users.

Is MileIQ free?

Yes, up to a point. The Free plan covers 40 drives every month, with automatic tracking and reports. Beyond that you need the Unlimited plan, at £7.91 a month billed annually or £9.49 billed monthly.

Cons:

  • 40 drives a month runs out quickly if you drive most days

  • Needs location tracking running in the background

Who is MileIQ best for?

MileIQ suits sole traders who drive a lot for work and know they’ll forget to log trips. Because it records every drive automatically, the log is complete and you only have to sort business from personal. If you make fewer than 40 drives a month, it’s free. If you drive more than that, weigh £7.91 a month against Tripcatcher at £1.49, which is built around UK rules and works out the VAT on fuel.
