AutoEntry, part of Sage, pulls the data out of receipts, invoices and bank statements and sends it to your accounting software. Plans start at £15.45 a month plus VAT for 50 credits.

At a glance
You photograph, scan or email a document, AutoEntry reads it and posts the details to your accounts. You pay by credits rather than per user, and unused credits roll over for up to 90 days.

What is AutoEntry?
AutoEntry is data-entry automation software owned by Sage. Instead of typing receipts and invoices into your accounts, you snap them on your phone, scan them or forward them by email, and AutoEntry extracts the details for you. It works with Sage, Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, KashFlow and Clear Books, and describes itself as up to 99% accurate.
How do AutoEntry credits work?
Each plan gives you a monthly allowance of credits, and each document uses some of them:
Receipt or expense - 1 credit
Purchase or sales invoice - 1 credit, or 2 with line items
Supplier statement - 2 credits
Bank or credit card statement - 3 credits per page
Unused credits roll over for up to 90 days
Key features
Mobile app for iPhone and Android, included with every plan
Capture by photo, scan or email
Full line-item capture, including description, unit price and quantity
Bank and credit card statement extraction
Supplier statement reconciliation
Unlimited users on every plan

Pros and cons
Pros:
Pay for what you use, not per user
Credits roll over for up to 90 days
Handles bank statements and line items, not only receipts
Works with most UK accounting packages, including Sage and FreeAgent
No contract
Free trial with 25 credits
Cons:
A monthly cost on top of your accounting software
Credits run out faster with line items and bank statements
More than most sole traders with a handful of receipts need
Doesn’t file anything with HMRC - you still need accounting software
Many accounting packages and business bank accounts now include basic receipt capture
Who is AutoEntry best for?
AutoEntry earns its fee if you have a steady stream of paperwork - supplier invoices, bank statements, a pile of receipts every month - and you want it in your accounts without typing. It’s a natural fit if you already use Sage. If you only have a few receipts a month, the capture built into your accounting software or business bank account is likely enough, and it costs nothing extra.
